After cataract removal surgery, patients will have much better vision and healthier eyes overall. Some patients, however, may still need to wear glasses after cataract surgery.

Patients at our offices in MontereySalinas, and King CityCA, often ask if glasses are necessary after cataract surgery. There’s never one set answer since so many variables have to be considered.

The team at Monterey County Eye Associates would like to cover some important considerations when it comes to glasses after cataract removal. This should provide insight into this matter and help you have realistic expectations about the benefits of the procedure.

The Need for Corrective Lenses After Cataract Removal Can Vary

Some people will need to wear glasses after cataract surgery, while others may be able to get by without glasses. In the latter case, patients may only need a simple pair of reading glasses.

Factors to Consider

Three factors will affect the need for glasses after cataract surgery:

  • The type of intraocular lens (IOL) placed during surgery
  • The level of astigmatism a patient has in their eye(s)
  • Overall eye health heading into the procedure

As part of the consultation process, we will go over all of these matters in detail.

Which IOL Can Eliminate My Need for Glasses After Surgery?

Generally speaking, patients who get multifocal lenses during cataract surgery are less likely to need glasses than patients who get monofocal lenses. Multifocal lenses allow patients to see clearly at different distances, while monofocal lenses are primarily for one distance. For cataract surgery patients with astigmatism, multifocal toric lenses may prove the most helpful option.

We can review your IOL options as well as their cost during your consultation and as part of the treatment planning phase of cataract surgery.
