Contact Lenses vs. LASIK By Monterey County Eye Associates on June 30, 2011

If you are nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism, your vision can be quite blurry at, sometimes to a point where you cannot properly see objects. It’s for this reason that people get corrective lenses, such as glasses or contacts. A great alternative to corrective lenses that people often consider is undergoing LASIK surgery, or a refractive surgery alternative such as PRK or LASEK.

The doctors of Monterey County Eye Associates have helped many patients deal with refractive errors by helping them discover the solution that’s best for their needs. At our Monterey and Salinas eye care centers, we will perform comprehensive eye exams. By assess your vision and eye health, we’ll be able to bring the world into focus for you.

It may seem that LASIK has some clear advantages over contact lenses, but that’s not the case for all patients. LASIK is quite convenient as it eliminates the need to wear contact lenses or any corrective lenses following surgery. The safe laser in the LASIK procedure will precisely reshape your cornea to ensure you see clearer. By getting LASIK, you may even save money in the long run compared to wearing contacts since you won’t have to pay for cleaning solution and new lenses.

But that said, Monterey contact lenses may be the better option for some patients since not all people are good candidate for LASIK or its alternative refractive surgeries. If you suffer from dry eye syndrome, LASIK is generally not a good idea for you since dry eye is a common symptom in the months following LASIK surgery. Poor cornea health or other issues with the cornea may also prevent you from undergoing LASIK surgery given the way that the surgery is performed.

It’s important that you come to Monterey County Eye Associates for a consultation so we can tell you what your best options for clear vision are. There are other possible solutions that we haven’t touched on here that may be right for you.
